Palama Meat Co. Recalls Some Kalua Pork Products

HONOLULU -- Palama Meat Co. on Sunday announced it is recalling some of its kalua pork on a voluntary basis.The company found a bacterium called listeria monocytogenes in some of its product, according to a statement released by the company.No one has reported becoming ill, Palama Meat Co. officials said. Someone who contracts listeriosis can have a fever, muscle aches and sometimes nausea or diarrhea. Read more information about listeria monocytogenes.
The product being recalled is about 5,300 pounds of kalua pork in 100 cases of May's Hawaii Kalua Brand Pork. The 16-ounce bags sold at Sam's Club and Costco in the islands from Aug. 6 until Sunday -- item No. 325466. They had a freeze date of Sept. 17 and 20.The company also recalled 10-pound cases of May's Kalua Brand Pork -- item No. 325469.The pork was made at the company's Kapolei plant from Aug. 4 to 7.Customers can receive refunds where they bought the products, company officials said in a written statement.
