HONOLULU -- The green bins are rolling out again this time to East Oahu the latest area slated to get curbside recycling pickups. It is part of the city's goal to eventually have most Oahu homes doing curbside recycling. The city set up its staging area at the back of Kuliouou Valley assembling the bins before piling them on trucks for delivery.
"Most people are just fascinated to watch because it is like a machine. These guys run along the truck drop the cans put it in front of your mailbox so people watch especially with kids," refuse collection supervisor Robert Aona said.Tuesday is just a start. It will take an entire month to distribute all 24,000 green bins from at Kuliouou to Manoa. And next month, East Oahu homes get blue bins for mixed recyclables."Some people are surprisingly happy to see us finally they go, 'Finally, I have been waiting for you guys for so long,'" Kuliouou resident Kalau Jones said. The green bins are for yard cuttings and other garden waste."I think it would be a lot more of a help. One thing, you don't have to run to Kailua to the dump when you trim trees or leave it out on the sidewalk and who knows when they are coming. I don't know when they are coming sometimes. It has to sit on the sidewalk weeks at a time," Kuliouou resident Colin Peters said.Landscape contractor Colin Peters said the green bins will make his yard work easier."I am excited because you don't have to bag it up any more and you can actually get quite a bit on one of the bins," Peters said.Mine Yamada said she's worried about space."The only problem is I don't know where to put all my bins I don't have enough room,"The city begins East Oahu recycling pickups the week of Nov. 3.If you think one bin isn't enough don't worry. The city say residents may apply for up to two extra green bins by calling the recycling department.
